What is Pilates?

Pilates emphasizes six fundamental concepts: control, centering, concentration, fluidity, precision and a specific Pilates breathing technique in a repertoire of more than 500 exercises. These exercises feature flowing movements on the mat or apparatus such as the Reformer or Cadillac, requiring the use of the "Powerhouse" or the Core of the body-- the deep abdominal muscles, buttock muscles and muscles around the spine.

Who Is Joseph Pilates?

"Physical fitness can neither be achieved by wishful thinking nor outright purchase."
-- Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates, a German athlete and trained nurse, developed this revolutionary form of exercise in the early part of the 20th century. His work with this exercise discipline is noted as some of the earliest forms of kinesio-therapy and was originally developed specifically for the rehab community. Originally named "Contrology," the Pilates form of exercise focuses primarily on the core muscles of the body and became very popular with athletes and dancers who studied and trained with Joseph Pilates in his studio in New York City from 1926-1967. Martha Graham and George Ballanchine were big fans then and hundreds of today's biggest athletes, models and actors say they owe their strong and lithe bodies to Pilates.
